Captured

By Liz

As we mentioned recently, the development process is at the point where we are making countless numbers of final checks before the launch. A big part of this is called our “Captured Test Fleet.” This is pretty simple: we are building several dozen cars that are intended to represent the “final” status of the 2008 car.

Then we drive the heck out of them.

We will attempt to drive as many miles as possible during the next several weeks; we could easily exceed a half-million total miles. Everything counts – from specific engineering tests, to simple things like driving to and from work, the kids’ baseball games, the grocery store … whatever.

Not a glamorous process, but important and effective. We’re in the process of putting people from all over the team (and even a few colleagues not directly on our team) into these very new cars built using the actual production process and parts. This is kind of like a final exam – except it lasts a couple of months. Everything everybody observes in the cars is noted and every mile driven is measured.

Are there now definite dates for start of production and for delivery of cars to dealers? If so, can you tell us what they are? Also, will any of the "Captured Test Fleet" cars be lent to any dealers to be used for early customer test drives, ala previous years 24 hour customer tests?

Where can we see updated pictures? I just placed my order this week and am anxious to know what I am buying. I LOVE my 2003 CTS! I'm hoping I won't be disappointed with the 08???

If this represents the final two months of testing, then I assume it wont be until September (at the earlist) before production begins and a few weeks thereafter when the car gets into the showroom.

Also, is most of this final testing done within a given area or throughout the USA (in other words, is winter testing complete?).

Hopefully you pay close attention to the rear differentials in these cars before these go into production. I've seen many posts on various Cadillac CTS forums that the biggest issue with the car right now is rear dif. whine, and some people have had to get their whole rear dif replaced a couple times all before 50k miles.

Hey, you guys say you drive the heck out of these cars, is their a chace you could drive three and a half hours to my house in one so I can drive the heck out of it. I work an hour and a half away from my job and I put 600 miles on my cars in a week, I can really put that car to the test. So, what do you say? Please!!!

I saw two of these today in the Detroit area! Are they starting to come off the production line? Neither of them had manufacturer's plates or camoflage. I want one - when can I get it???

My understanding is the new 3.6L direct injected engine is not E85 compatible. Other than the lower energy content per unit volume of E85 vs. the standard E10 mix, was there a particular reason not to market an E85 capable engine?

Given the recent push for greater distribution of E85 due to increased concern on energy independence, it would seem this is a missed marketing opportunity for GM.

The CTS will go into production on July 23rd. There will only be limited numbers produced the first few days and weeks. The ramp up will take some time. There will be some Cadillac dealers with cars by the end of August, but not alot. Most dealerships should see at least have a couple cars on the lot by the end of September.

Count me as a vote for the awd/manual combo. I've been driving a Camaro in Michigan for the past 5 years and I'm getting tired of the winter-time challenge. Also I don't think that it should be necessary to "bling" out the car in order to have a pass-through from the trunk for skis and such. In 07 it was a simple $400 option. It's standard on the cheapest Mustangs and Chargers. With the new 300 horse engine, I'm envisioning being able to build an American-made WRX sti.

Are 18inch chrome wheels available on the cts? Are the wheels in the 18inch summer tire performance package polished or chrome. I saw somewhere in the ordering manual that said possible accessories are chrome wheels. What do you know about this?

Dear All: I really like what GM/Cadillac have done re the upcoming '08 CTS (in fact I've ordered a fully optioned AWD version). Have read tons of positive views about the car on the web, however a few negative comments are now beginning to creep in. The main critism has to do with the weight of the upcoming car.
According to the GM press release, the RWD auto trans car will weigh 3872 lbs, with the AWD version weighing a whopping 4101 lbs. Competing AWD-configured cars in this segment (such as the BMW 335xi and Infiniti G35x) weigh some 300-400 lbs less.
I believe it is timely for the editors of this blog to offer some comment on the acceleration & handling capabilities of a 4100 pound CTS. It is genuinely hoped that the "304 hp / 273 lb-ft of torque 3.6L SIDI V6 engine" will adequately cope with all of this reported weight. Can you please elaborate on this?
On a totally unrelated matter, I and others would appreciate a definitive comment from GM now on the issue of Bluetooth integration & its availability on the '08 CTS. In one of the latest videos on the Cadilac/CTS site there is a sweet, elderly lady (a Grandmother if you will) asking about the availability of Bluetooth on the new car. To ref. Liz's previous comment on this, is Bluetooth ONLY going to be available as an option via a dealer-installed pack? I believe Cadillac really needs to re-think this one.

Can you tell me what technologies are used in the AWD CTS? What percent of power front to rear? Is it adaptable front to rear? Left to right? Thanks!

Is Cadillac still planning on a 2 door coupe version of the CTS? How soon will we see this car in production? Is there a diet planned for this car, along with proper placement of the ebrake? Will the styling remain the same, or are there (hopefully) improvements planned in the front-end grill styling? Will AWD and the 6-speed be offered TOGETHER?? Will this be a true BMW competitor at a more affordable pricepoint?

When will GM have a 2008 CTS-V ready? Any idea of how many horses they will squeeze under the hood?

Assuming that it is still a "green light", is the styling completed on the CTS 2-door coupe? Is there any chance of a 1/2 door (ala Mazda RX-8) to offer better access to the rear seat? When does the mule testing staart on that car? Liz and Rob, will you stay on for that car as well?
