Driving huge numbers of miles in lots of new and different places all over the world, I’ve come to appreciate some things unrelated to my normal job in chassis development, such as really good navigation and audio systems.
We’ve spent a massive amount of time developing some new and interesting “infotainment” systems. While I rely on (and enjoy) these features a lot, I’m not an expert on how they were developed. We have a small team of electronics folks that sweat all these details – including working with the top experts in GPS navigation, iPod/MP3 players, home theater surround sound, etc.
In a few days, we’ll feature a special post or two from Charles Massoll in our electronics group, who will give us a little break from our regular “driving” posts to provide a look at how they test these high-tech electronics.

Real Ipod integration is one of the major points that is putting the new CTS on my shopping list. Trying to fiddle with an Ipod while driving is much more of a distraction than a cell phone. I look forward to the day when I don't have to take my hands off the wheel to change a track.

They're sticking with Bose, right? I don't know where I saw it, but I thought I read that the CTS will have a Bang & Oluffson (or was it a Mark/Lev?) sound system. That made me disappointed. I've heard one in a Lexus RX330 once, and I can't say I was so impressed as I was with the Bose in my STS. I mean it sounded good, but not Bose good.
I think I heard again that they were back to a Bose 10-speaker. Can anyone confirm that?

Please - I hope you NEVER let the beancounters take away Bose. Cadillac cannot settle for anything less. I've never heard a system as pure and crystal clear as Bose. Even cranked up, there is no distortion and the sound is perfect and clean. Cadillac owners expect the best and we have it with Bose.

Last I heard we could upgrade to the 10-speaker Bose system. I can't wait for the iPod integration. Finally a clean and clear connection while driving in the car!

I noticed on the pre-production photos, that the center stack contains an “XM” Radio button containing the "XM” logo. Is that going to stay with production? Nothing like buying a new CTS with an XM logo button and the XM name/logo being non-existent 6 months later. That would look very cheesy! Hopefully, the button will be changed to "SAT" or something more universal. I’m interested on Mr. Massoll’s thoughts/comments. This would be a very BIG blunder if overlooked.

I really hope to see Bluetooth. My cell phone is Bluetooth capable. Don't need OnStar.

I know the CTS will have a hard drive built in it... so how big is it and how can you upload you music to it...Wifi... onstar or some special software? Can you upload Mpeg or AVI files to it. can you download your maps for the NAV on the hard drive.

Toyota offers bluetooth in their entry level cars. GM wants you to buy a monthly OnStar with a seperate Verizon phone number...
