The Video You've Been Waiting To See

By Ed

We just came back from Germany. As promised, here's the video of John Heinricy's sub-8 minute lap of the Nurburgring's Nordschleife.

To clarify, the car had no performance or operational modifications outside of what we intend to offer in production. We did have a couple of customary safety precautions, as the first goal of our testing is always to keep drivers like John safe. The car had a harness bar upon which a 6-way racing safety belt system was mounted. We also had a fire supression unit on board. These things add a little bit of weight to the car, certainly not helping performance any. Stock tires, too.

We had a chance to mount some cameras on the car and had the benefit of a beautiful day. Enjoy.

It's wonderful to have a renewed sense of pride in the products of an American car company. Well done. 'Standard of the World,' indeed.

Wow! The car was flying around the track effortlessly. Are there any plans to do another run on the "Ring" with the manual transmission (saves 100# in weight)? Is the manual transmission the same as the Corvette ZR1 manual in shift quality, feel and shifter travel, or has Cadillac improved its version vs. the ZR1 version?

Welcome the new standard of luxury performance sport sedans.

First, thanks for posting this!

Second, hopefully you can clear this up, since, unfortunately, the video doesn't. Is the timing done with a standing start or flying start? I know the answer, but unfortunately there's a lot of doubt out there with regards to GM's standard testing procedure on the 'Ring.

I think it would have been beneficial to have shown the entire lap, literally from start to finish.

I just want to say that you guys have done one helluva job with this car. The interior seemed as quiet, as well, a luxury sedan!! You have effectively leap frogged the competition (M3/5, C/E63, RS4/6) in one single effort. Not only is the performance superior, but this car is drop dead gorgeous inside and out and is ten times more user friendly than any of the European counterparts which are dark and somber. Anyone who does not acknowledge this achievement is either completely biased or simply delusional.

John H seemed so relaxed behind the wheel that it seemed almost easy. He also didn't give much reaction to the ridiculous time he posted so, perhaps he wanted to go even faster!

For the record, I've been a Cadillac fan since the '98 STS. Nice to see us back on top. Unfortunately, I'll only be able to afford a "regular" CTS 3.6DI some time soon.

Why was the automatic used for this run?

Is this the AWD version?

Awesome, even at 120+ it looks like the ride is still smooth. I'm gonna be getting one in white with a 6 speed :)
Question, though: Is the paddle-shifter faster the the 6 speed?

I can't quite tell because of the moving from shot to shot after John waves his finger for a go whether this was a standing, rolling or running start?? This has to be the coolest 'Ring video I have ever seen though. The car is so quiet and easy going the whole way through. I love it!!

Let me get this straight...Heinricy gets to do what he does, *and* he gets paid to do it? Sheesh...

WOW. CTS-V with auto 6-speed. What time will be in CTS-V with 6-speed manual?

Was the air conditioner running?
I think I can beat that time, just fly me over there, strap me in and I will prove it.

Further suggestion: pick one of the cameras, like the one mounted on the harness bar behind John, and just stick with that camera throughout the entire run. Don't worry about the screen wipes, cut scenes, different camera angles, etc.

Thanks again!

Great video. Felt like you where a passenger. One question How come there was no sound. To truely add to the enjoyment of this video experience. The sound of the engine rev-ing and tires slidding would have made this experience complete!

The car looks awesome through the ring, stable quiet and smooth the whole way.

John - great result!

Great video! What a great selling point for the car!
Where do I apply for the job. I pay well.

That is a great safety video. Where is the CTS-V?

I have to say that was an amazing run at at the ring. the car was so stable, even when it it went over that bump mid corner near the end of the track! I don't know of many cars that can say they are that stable threw that turn. I just have a few questons.
1. I thought I saw that the tachometer has a red string of lights that follows the needle as it goes up the tach, am I seening that right?
2. can you tell me the top speed of that the car experienced during the fastest lap video?
3. if you can't tell me, why not?

This is a great achievement by both Heinricy and Cadillac. John is an Iceman behind the wheel and I, for one, enjoyed the shots of the front wheel around the track. The lack of quick-flick corrections John is having to make as he hits curbing and oversteers around corners is a testament to how well sorted the chasis is. Congratulations, Cadillac. Make mine deep burgundy with anthracite wheels and the paddle-shift (I commute in LA).

This is pure "git-r-done" - Ricky Bobby weapons grade lubricious lattice of coincidence M-er F-er's. Are you kidding me - fastest sedan in the world???? Yes. Yes. Deep Breath. YES. Believer Lutz said so. Executive Driver Heinricy proved so. Naysayers? Remember that the first step is denial - pretty soon you'll be convincing yourself that despite ridiculous price, silly Bangled flame surfacing and derided I-Drive that you like the M5/M6 better. Its OK -there are others like you - call yourselves post modern Luddites, and try to sleep well. Rock the Wreath and Crest!!! I love the audacity - GO BIG , and snuff everyone in the way. The new penalty of leadership.

Can we assume, having poked the purists in both eyes by not only flogging a slushbox but not even trying to shift it himself, that he's not completely gone over the bend to plush-chair executive complacency and that these laps are at least run with the Stabilitrak off?

Congratulations to all on the high performance team for meeting your goal.
Perhaps its time for the marketing department to provide some unique marketing,a Ring Taxi would give the average person a chance to experience Cadillacs performance. This would be an A B comparison as the M5 is now doing this.

All I can say is two BMWs and one Infinity later, it's about time Cadillac (and GM)! This is what will put people like me back in a GM seat and forget about the Euro and Japanese prospects. Better late than never I suppose. Cadillac, welcome to the true enthusiast market. Keep it real and your sales will certainly not disappoint.

Gee, not too bad for "american junk" huh?
ACHTUNG BABY, INDEED!!!

Awesome! Its great to see GM taking on the international competition and beating them on benchmark track. Thanks John,Bob, and the entire development team!

Can't wait for this one. Any chance there will be a CTS-V giveaway?

Notice a professional driver's hand position on the steering wheel? See that both his arms aren't stretched straight? That his sitting position is close to the steering? If you're serious about driving then don't lean back into your seat, sit low & straight arm steering. Only posers do that. Enjoy your drive.

Well I don't know where the start and end points were for timing purposes but that looked like 8:20 for a full lap, not 7:59....not bad, but no prizes.
Was the car limited to 155mph? If not - all BMs normally are - the advantage of an unlimited car on Dottinger Hohe would be quite significant.

And the wheel technique was not so hot - hands should always be in the same place on the wheel, he definitely needs to sit closer....

Ooops got my timing wrong - not 8:20, but 8:04.....so better, but still not 7:59.....
